How Many Met Boxes?

Could anyone tell me how many Mackenzie Tench met boxes there were? I've seen various figures ranging from 600 - 1000.

Also, can anyone tell me the installation and removal dates for the Barney Bypass box?

Thanks,
Francis

Hi Francis,

Police Call Box S63: Installed 13th Jan 1936, demolished 19th Nov 1980. Location: Barnet By Pass Road, South Mimms, Barnet, London.

As near as I can make out from reading Alan's excellent researches here on TB, there were 685 Police Boxes in the area now known as Greater London. Most of these were the Mackenzie-Trench design (though those installed in the late 1950s were of a simplified design and had 3 windows on the sides and rear).

There were a further 383 Mackenzie-Trench style Police Boxes in Glasgow (originally painted red and with an outsized phone panel/uneven panel spacing on the front elevations).

There were a further 40 Mackenzie-Trench style Police Boxes in Bristol (based on the earliest of the Mackenzie-Trench boxes, these had outsized windows and were painted dark green and cream).

I hope this helps.
